Health, Safety & Well-being
The safety of our people is at the core of everything we do at Manitowoc, our goal is to provide an incident-free workplace and ensure that our people and the people we work with return home safely every day. To achieve that we are continually integrating the health and safety strategy into our systems and processes. Our ways of working are continually reviewed to improve our safety performance and through it – our safety culture.
At the heart of our operations lies the Manitowoc’s Safety Management System (SMS), an indispensable multi-layered framework. It addresses not only legal and regulatory requirements but also forms the foundation for the execution of our operations. Every level of the organization bear responsibility for the implementation and adherence to this system, ensuring comprehensive understanding, accountability, and individual actions of all employees. Through our SMS system, we document and investigate all safety incidents and near misses events with a special emphasis on events with potential for severe Injury or fatality. Our approach focuses on strengthening our response to these critical operations, fostering an environment where in the event of the incident, our robust safety culture and Manitowoc’s global SMS processes collectively ensure the prevention of significant harm.
Enabling an injury-free workplace for all our people, globally
Cultivating a work culture that consistently prioritizes safety as our utmost concern
Introducing Manitowoc’s Safety vision into all our processes as the foundation of our operations
In 2023 we ended the year with a RIR* of 1.01. This is an all-time low safety result and a 34% improvement over 2022. This achievement was possible through four focus areas:
1 - SLAM: In 2023 almost 80,000 hazard management processes were completed by our employees through use of the SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) tool.
2 - Interactive Observations: In 2023, approximately 17,000 Interactive Observations were completed by the teams, a 70% increase year-over-year.
3 - Continued deployment of The Manitowoc Way: The cultural foundation of the company.
4 - Proactive dedication to safety in our operations: It is through our team’s dedication to measure and commit to safety in our operations pre-emptively that we have achieved strong results.
We firmly believe that through all these fundamentals in further enhancing safety culture we achieved the all-time-low RIR result in 2023. While SLAM is the direct hazard identification and management tool, the Interactive Observations process is based on employees' dialog and providing each other with feedback on possible safety improvements.
