BALTAR, PORTUGAL

Shotblasting turbines upgrade

A total of 12 new, higher-efficiency turbines have been installed, accompanied by an advanced automatic management program. This innovative system activates the turbines only when a fly bar enters the shotblasting process. Once the fly bar exits the shotblasting cabinet, the turbines are automatically switched off, ensuring optimal energy use and efficiency.

Implementation of a Building Management System

The team has implemented a comprehensive Building Management System (BMS) that allows the factory to control all heating equipment within the factory. This system enables the team to define and permanently adjust heating programs, as well as start and stop each piece of equipment instantly. Depending on the activity, heating can also be
halted in specific workshops. The BMS records outdoor and workshop temperature data daily, providing us with real-time temperature information.

Waste Management

The Manitowoc Company is steadfast in its commitment to minimizing waste across all operations, including manufacturing and construction activities at our facilities. Recognizing the critical importance of waste reduction, we are now shifting our focus towards recycling and reusing waste that cannot be eliminated.

Our new target for 2025 is to increase the proportion of waste recycled or reused to 70%.

Ongoing initiatives include:

Dedicated workforce efforts to meticulously sort waste by type for recycling or reuse.
Collaborations with suppliers to minimize packaging and incoming waste through optimized delivery schedules and returnable packaging solutions.
Partnerships with waste management companies to explore innovative methods for handling the waste we generate.

Recycling shotblasting dust

Shot blasting dust, which previously accounted for 50% of our landfill waste, was historically sent to landfill centers without any material recovery. This process incurred treatment costs of $147 per ton and $1,200 per transport (20 to 25 big bags per transport), contributing to significant monetary and environmental impacts.

By establishing a new waste treatment sector, we have successfully transformed this waste into reusable metallurgical products. This initiative has enabled us to meet the group's objectives of reducing waste sent to landfill.

Key achievements include:

Reduced treatment costs: $115 per ton (including transport).
Waste diversion: An average of 50 tons per year is now reused instead of being sent to landfill.

Wilhelmshaven,Germany
Degreasing of shims

Used sliding shims from booms, previously laden with grease, required recycling and separation at a significant cost. To enhance our environmental sustainability, the Wilhelmshaven team implemented a process to wash the used shims, effectively removing the grease. This eco-friendly approach allowed the factory to recycle the shims without incurring additional costs and generates savings from the waste.

Water Usage

At The Manitowoc Company, we recognize the critical importance of water conservation and are committed to implementing sustainable practices across all our operations. Our efforts to reduce water consumption and preserve this vital resource are integral to our environmental strategy and align with our broader sustainability goals.

MOULINS, FRANCE
Water consumption monitoring

Previously, the water consumption monitoring was limited to a single annual meter reading, providing insufficient control and understanding of our usage.

In 2024, the team installed a transmitter on the main factory meter. Building on this, they have now added four additional meters to monitor water usage in key processes, including painting booths, parts washing, and THP cleaning of the booths.

This enhanced monitoring system provides us with detailed insights into our water consumption, enabling us to manage it more effectively, especially during drought alerts. More importantly, it supports our overarching goal of preserving water resources for future generations.

Crane wash improvement

Our previous cleaning foam required high dosages to produce foam, which dissolved quickly, resulting in short exposure times and low cleaning quality.

We have now introduced a new cleaner that produces better and longer-lasting foam. This improved foaming action absorbs more dirt and significantly enhances cleaning power. Consequently, we use less cleaning concentrate and reduce water consumption. Overall, the use of materials is halved, contributing to our sustainability goals.

Key figure: 8% reduction which corresponds to 610,000 liters water consumption reduction compared to 2023.

VOC Emissions

The painting process at our facilities is crucial for ensuring the optimal lifespan of our cranes. However, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are volatile chemical particles produced during the combustion and processing of paints. These emissions can have both short and long-term adverse health effects and contribute to global warming. It is therefore imperative for every industry to be aware of VOCs and strive to limit their emissions.

Thanks to technical innovations, we are becoming increasingly efficient at controlling and reducing the kilograms of VOCs generated per hours worked in our manufacturing processes.

Paint mixing automation

Current Usage: One of our main paints requires manual mixing and frequent cleaning of the paint pipeline and air pump. This process consumes more paint than necessary during mixing and cleaning, leading to low paint utilization.

Process change: Upgrade to Automated Paint Mixing System

Reduced Cleaning Frequency: The new system will decrease the frequency of cleaning the paint pipeline and air pump during paint application.
Improved Efficiency: This upgrade will reduce paint consumption and VOC emissions, enhancing overall efficiency and sustainability in our painting process.

Compact Mobile Filter Station

We implemented a compact mobile filter station designed to perform sanding or paint touch-ups while effectively removing harmful airborne contaminants. These advanced filtration systems are capable of capturing particles as small as 3 microns, significantly improving air quality and ensuring a safer working environment.

Sustainable Purchasing Initiative

In 2023, The Manitowoc Company conducted Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) on one top-slewing tower, all-terrain, and rough terrain crane model. These assessments revealed that purchased materials significantly contribute to the environmental impact of our products. This insight led us to launch our Sustainable Purchasing Initiative.

Sustainable Procurement
Our initiative aims to achieve cost reductions through decreased energy consumption, optimized logistics, and minimized social and environmental compliance costs. We actively seek opportunities with suppliers who offer products with lower environmental footprints while adhering to technical specifications and data regulations.

Methodology
Following The Manitowoc Way principles, we analyze our current purchasing practices to identify inefficiencies and waste. By adopting a risk and opportunity management mindset, we strive to make our procurement processes more sustainable and efficient.

Through this initiative, The Manitowoc Company is committed to engaging with its value chain for reducing the environmental impact of our products.
