The Manitowoc Company was founded in 1902 and has over a 120-year tradition of providing high-quality, customer-focused products and support services to its markets. Our goal is to build the physical communities of tomorrow by serving our customers through managing the lifecycle of our machines, including new and used cranes; enhanced service and product support; comprehensive selling options, like trade-ins and RPOs (Rent-to-Purchase options); remanufacturing services; and digital solutions.

2024 Employee of the Year

We take immense pride at The Manitowoc Company in recognizing the dedication and ingenuity of our team members. This year, we are thrilled to honor Eduard Kehl as our 2024 Employee of the Year. Eduard, based at our facility in Germany, has been a vital part of the Manitowoc family for the past decade, working tirelessly in the superstructure line.

Eduard's journey with Manitowoc is a testament to his problem-solving skills and innovative mindset. When a critical issue arose in the assembly of carriers and superstructures, Eduard stepped up to the challenge. The problem he addressed was identifying electronic issues after boom mount, which was both time-consuming and costly. Previous attempts to address this had failed due to the high costs associated with new testing equipment.

In early 2024, Eduard, along with two colleagues, was tasked with finding a solution. Eduard initially proposed building a "boom dummy" – a tester using original parts from the boom but with shortened harnesses. However, he quickly realized that this idea was impractical due to its weight and complexity.

Undeterred, Eduard took it upon himself to devise a more feasible solution. He spent his own time at home working on the project and continued to refine it during his shifts. His dedication paid off, resulting in a practical and efficient tester that addressed the electronic issues effectively.

Eduard's story is a shining example of the innovation and commitment that drives The Manitowoc Company forward. His ability to think outside the box and his relentless pursuit of excellence have made a significant impact on our operations. We are proud to celebrate Eduard Kehl as our Employee of the Year 2024, and we look forward to seeing his continued contributions to our success.

Welding torch fault diagnosis

Baltar, Portugal

To optimize resources and increase maintenance efficiency, our maintenance team developed a machine for fault detection in welding torches. This innovation addresses one of our top three breakdown interventions. When a torch needs diagnosis, it is connected to the equipment, which tests all normal fault parameters—trigger, water, gas, mass, and isolation—in less than one minute, providing a final diagnosis.

The initiative began with the need for a faster and more accurate way to identify torch problems. By using this machine, we have reduced maintenance time by approximately 165 hours per year. Additionally, all repairs are now conducted internally, eliminating the need for subcontracting and resulting in annual savings of $16,000.

Job Safety Analysis Dematerialized on Mobile Phone

In 2024, The Manitowoc Company proudly recognized the innovative solution of dematerializing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) on mobile phones as the best idea of the year from our Aftermarket program. This initiative stemmed from safety meetings held at the end of 2023, where after-sales technicians highlighted the challenge they faced in accessing operating procedures while in the field.

Previously, our documents were stored on Teams, but this system proved to be unclear and inefficient for technicians needing quick and easy access to procedures. Additionally, the old system did not adequately showcase the extensive work done by the Product Service France team, which had developed over fifty operating procedures for assembly, troubleshooting, and more.

Seizing the opportunity presented by our digitalization strategy, we developed a mobile application to house our operating methods. This app not only eliminates the need for paper documents but also streamlines the work of technicians, supervisors, and managers by providing easy access to all safety-related information.

Recognizing that existing market solutions did not fully meet our needs, we collaborated with our in-house development department to create a custom application. This app, identifiable by our unique logo, can be installed on most mobile phones and is now used by all our field employees. It is also easily transferable to all Manitowoc employees working on construction sites.

This project is a testament to the power of collaboration between IT, service technicians, and the security department. It represents a significant step forward in our commitment to safety and operational efficiency, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement as the best idea of the year 2024.

Workgreen Lessons Learned Award

Air Compressor Timer

Previously, our factory relied on two air compressors: a 160KW unit operating at full capacity and an 87KW unit on standby. This setup was highly inefficient. By implementing a timer and a visual control system, we were able to switch off the 160KW compressor and utilize a more efficient 55KW compressor instead. This change eliminated the unnecessary energy consumption of the 87KW standby unit. As a result, we saved 310,000 kWh of electricity and reduced CO2 emissions by 230 tons.
