Our Safety Vision is at the core of everything we do.
Because our teams work in potentially high-risk environments, whether on the shop floor or on job sites, health and safety is a never-ending journey at Manitowoc. Our Safety Vision is at the core of everything we do. Our goal is to implement this Vision into our processes and activities in an effective manner every day.
To achieve our Safety Vision, it is essential we have a solid framework in place. The Manitowoc Safety Management System (SMS) is an essential pillar of The Manitowoc Way. It is built on five foundations and consists of 20 elements that include both process and culture-related aspects of safety. Our SMS addresses legal and regulatory requirements related to safety management in our field of work. It also sets standards for our processes that control hazards in the workplace and throughout our operations.
We continuously evolve our SMS and assess its implementation through internal audits. We intend to achieve standardized approaches to our core activities and manage hazards in the safest and most effective manner through our SMS. With the strong foundation of the SMS, we are consistently taking actions to identify and eliminate hazards in the workplace and enhance our safety culture further. The goal is clear – zero injuries.

In 2022, Manitowoc recorded an annual safety result which was over three times lower than the industry average.
These achievements were possible only through the strong commitment of our employees. Over 87,000 safety observations were generated in 2022 as part of the SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) and Interactive Observation processes. Constantly raising awareness of hazards, effectively managing the control measures, and reacting to changes in the surrounding environment – these are the essence of our SLAM process, but also what makes a true difference in effective management of health and safety. Our SLAM process is supported by the Interactive Observations process, where we reflect on our activities, provide one other with feedback on possible safety improvements, and evaluate our joint work with a view on health and safety.
In 2023, we will focus on proactive measures to reduce our Recordable Injury Rate (RIR), enhance the quality of the SLAM process, and continue to engage the workforce on safety. These are the key drivers for reaching our goal of zero injuries.

On August 10th, 2022, our team in the warehouse and parts distribution center at Saint Pierre de Chandieu, France, reached a remarkable milestone – 1,000 consecutive days without a workplace accident leading to a recordable injury.
This outstanding success demonstrates how strongly the team at Saint Pierre de Chandieu lives the Manitowoc core values and effectively implements the Safety Management System (SMS) into their daily routines. To reach this achievement, the team focused on improving hazard awareness through the SLAM process, implementing on-the-job processes, and organizing work between two shifts.
Congratulations to our team at Saint Pierre de Chandieu for this fantastic result!
We are committed to improving our safety performance by focusing on these key fundamentals:
